I am writing on behalf of the Horsham
Society to object strongly to this
application. Worthing Road is an important
entry route to the town the design of which
marks the transition from countryside to an
urban street scene. As the Horsham Town
Design Statement SPD (page 25) says “Of
particular importance are the key entrance
roads that form the gateways to the town.
Worthing Road, Guildford Road, Warnham Road
and Brighton Road still retain a special
character and importance. Often a mixture of
architectural styles, they nevertheless
create a sense of moving gently from country
to town.” Worthing Road is characterised by
relatively large and widely spaced detached
properties set back from the road. The
proposed development would be an
inappropriate infill which would give an
uncharacteristically cramped appearance to
the street scene at the very start of this
important transition. John Steele Secretary,
