Comments:

I am writing on behalf of the Horsham Society to object to this application. We recognise that outline consent has been given but we are not happy with the proposed design or the proposed level of sustainable home construction. In the document the applicants refer to sustainability and say the properties will be constructed to Code Level 3. This is minimal and the Council should seek a higher standard for these executive homes. The site, being fairly rural, warrants housing of more traditional appearance and using locally sourced materials. Some of the materials proposed, for example larch boarding, is not representative of the area. If stone is used for for a facing on external walls, it should be a sandstone (being a local product) - many examples can be seen in the Storrington and West Chiltington areas. A local stock facing brick would be very acceptable. With regard to the proposed white render, whilst many examples can be seen locally, it degrades extremely quickly and the architectural detailing needs to be of the highest quality to ensure that the use of such a finish is acceptable. The appearance of the houses is something akin to modern properties constructed in the Cotswolds - the applicants should be asked to study representative examples in the Sussex area.
