I am writing on behalf of the Horsham
Society to object strongly to this
application. Guildford Road is one of the
main gateway entrances to the town and has
long been recognised as making an important
contribution to the character of the town
and the transition from country to town.
This is recognised in the Horsham Town
Design Statement (page25) which states that
future development should protect and
preserve the character of the approach
routes. Furthermore on page 31 the SPD
states that "the guiding principle [for
parking] should be that appropriate
provision is made for off-street parking
without detriment to the visual character of
the area". Guildford Road at this point is
characterised by large houses set well back
from the road with unobstructed front
gardens. This proposal would be completely
out of keeping in that it involves the
construction of a large building close to
the Worthing Road. The fact that it would
currently be partially shielded by shrubs is
immaterial as these are merely transitory
features. It would be completely
inappropriate front garden development.
There is adequate space for off-street
parking already on the drive and the
proposal would be seriously detrimental to
the visual character of the area. The
application should be refused. John Steele
