I am writing on behalf of the Horsham
Society to object strongly to this
application. It amounts to a request to be
allowed to place an advertising hoarding on
an attractive grassed area on one of the
major entry roads into the town. Were it for
Hovis or Shell petrol there would be no
question of it being approved and there are
no special circumstances to warrant approval
in this case. Berkeley Homes have been
permitted to erect extensive advertising
signage at the entrances to their
development and all that should be permitted
beyond that are the normal small yellow
direction signs attached to street furniture
as appropriate. The Horsham Town Design
Statement SPD (Page 34) clearly states that
in respect of advertisements "The guiding
principle should be that advertising is
restricted to commercial areas and
buildings, and should respect the context
and location". This application fails both
tests and should be refused. We also
consider that the length of time requested -
5 years - is excessive. John Steele
