Areas of Special Character
The current Local Plan identifies a
number of locations within the town as “areas of
special character”, mainly stretches on the key
approach roads such as Guildford Road, Worthing Road,
Brighton Road and Warnham Road. Whilst this does not
give them same protection as a conservation area their
special character is nevertheless taken into account
when considering planning applications.
The Horsham Society
considers there are many more areas which would
benefit from being identified in this way, for example
groups of buildings whose design and setting taken as
a whole provide particularly good examples of a period
in Horsham's history, and where any future development
should have regard to this.
A number of
potential areas have been identified and the Planning
Sub Committee recently spent a morning on site visits.
Once the work is completed the Society will be
consulting on its ideas, possibly including a small
exhibition.
